Washington Post: Micah One of Most Influential Congregations
Temple Micah "has become one of America's most influential Reform synagogues," according to an article by Rachel Karas in the Sunday, Nov. 24, Washington Post on the Temple's 50th anniversary. Quoting the manifesto in the lobby that says, "Reform is a verb," Rabbi Zemel told the Post, "We're not static. We're thinking all the the time to figure out how to be a synagogue with a lightness of heart and sense of humor."

We culminate our celebration of Micah's 50th Anniversary and Rabbi Zemel's three decades with us on Sunday, June, 2, at the Four Seasons Hotel with the Gala, a fancy name for a fun Micah-style community get together. Our own David Gregory will be emcee and Rabbi Lawrence Hoffman--mentor of Rabbis Zemel and Lederman, FOM (friend of Micah) and one of the best speakers around--will keynote. This event is for everyone, newcomers, veterans, married, single, empty nesters and expectant parents. Register here by May 14. May 23: Learn How You Can Help Vulnerable DC Youth
Micah is partnering with Sasha Bruce Youthwork to improve the lives of runaway, homeless and at-risk youth. Find out about the program and how you can help at an orientation session on Thursday, May 23, 7:00 to 9:00. Location TBD. Initial joint events will be game nights at SBY’s Bruce House near Capitol Hill and two fun one-day events this summer. SBY operates more than 18 youth programs including transitional shelter, family counseling, workforce development and afterschool programs. For more info contact Micah's coordinators.
Two Great Thinkers/Speakers at One Event
The Annual Altschul Scholar-in-Residence program, on Saturday, June 1, at 5 pm, features Brandeis Professor Leonard Saxe and Rabbi Lawrence Hoffman on the Future of the American Synagogue. As part of our Gala weekend culminating our 50th Anniversary Celebration, the speakers will discuss current trends in the American synagogue and share their vision of a vibrant Jewish future in the United States.
Help Honor Long-term Micah Members on May 31
Micah's 25 Year Club welcomes 12 members to its ranks at Kabbalat Shabbat Services on Friday, May 31. The service will feature news, events, quotes and songs from 1988. The 12 new members--Arlene Altman, Janet Hahn and Ken Simon, Barbara and Skip Halpern, Lynne Landsberg and Dennis Ward, Harlan Messinger, Jeff Passel, Kathy and Stan Soloway and Neil Welles--bring club membership up to 124 members who have been with Micah at least 25 years. Services begin at 6:30 pm following an oneg at 6 pm.
