Funny Women: Movie Screening Shines Light on Jewish Comedians of Stage and Screen
Micah members and friends have an opportunity to tap into the wellspring of Jewish women's voices--and laugh a lot--when Gilda Radner and Jewish women from Molly Picon to Wendy Wasserstein show up in the documentary "Making Trouble" at the temple at 7 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 24.
The event, sponsored by Kol Isha (A Woman's Voice) and the Membership Committee, is a chance to celebrate Havdalah and acquaint friends with a very Micah experience.
Making Trouble, produced by the Jewish Women's Archive and released in 2007, features footage and inter
views about the role Jewish women have played in America's comic tradition. The film includes Picon's silent films from 1903, Fanny Brice's Ziegfield Follies shows and Radner's work on Saturday Night Live as well as the comedy of Sophie Tucker, Joan Rivers and Wasserstein--Jewish women who made audiences roar and changed the world of entertainment and the times they lived in.
Each of these stars offers a unique voice, shaped by her experience as a Jewish woman.
Remember Saturday nights with Roseanne Rosannadanna, Judy Miller, Lisa Loopner, Emily Litella, Baba Wawa, Debbie Doody and Candy Slice? Remember Ed Sullivan's comediennes? Remember great theater about women's lives that mirrored your own? Some remember Mollie, Fanny and Sophie...
