Wednesday, August 10, 12:00 pm.   Lunch and Learn with Virginia Spatz: Jews and Racial Justice at Social Hall.   The story of Jews and race relations in the U.S. is complex and conflicting: In past decades, Jews were sometimes viewed as outside “whiteness” and sometimes inside it. Some Jewish work for black civil rights came from a brotherly vantage point, while some took a more paternalistic view; Jewish individuals and groups have led in many social justice efforts intended to benefit communities of color, but Jews who look more like Sammy Davis Jr. than Bernie Sanders continue to report experiences of exclusion from Jewish communities around the country. We’ll outline a little background explore where we are now, and hear how some Jewish groups approach contemporary racial justice challenges.

Saturday, September 10, 05:00 pm.   Ta-Nehisi Coates, "Between the World and Me" discussion at Temple Micah.   From Rabbi Zemel: Dear Friends, Black Lives Matter! All Lives Matter! "Like so many important conversations, the dichotomy above leads us nowhere. It leads the country nowhere. These two truths should not contradict even as they are seen to clash in today's charged climate in this country. A year ago, I was deeply moved when I read Ta-Nehisi Coates, Between the World and Me. I have thought of the book almost constantly as the past year unfolded. Last winter, I was invited by the Religious Action Center to write a study guide for the book which you will find attached and on our website. For several weeks, I have thought about how we as the Temple Micah community might engage in a conversation and more on this complicated subject of America and race relations. To that end, I invite you to read the Ta-Nehisi Coates book and come to a conversation at Micah on Shabbat afternoon. I hope this conversation will be one small step in helping us prepare for the High Holy Days as we consider our lives as American Jews as well as lead to a wider conversation on a critical question facing our country. I hope that many of you read the book and come to our discussion."

The writers, aged twelve to twenty-two years, wrote as refugees, in hiding or passing as non-Jews, or imprisoned in ghettos. Alexandra will introduce the writers — a range of young people of differing backgrounds, cultural and political views, life experiences, and personalities — and will read from their diaries to show how their accounts of daily events and often unexpected thoughts, ideas, and feelings serve to deepen and complicate our understanding of life during the Holocaust.
