St. Luke's Homeless Shelter

St. Luke's Shelter Meal Program and Other Volunteer Opportunities

  • Temple Micah volunteers prepare and serve ready-to-eat dinners at St. Luke's Shelter for six homeless men located at the St. Luke's campus of Metropolitan Methodist Church at Wisconsin Ave. and  Calvert St., NW, down the street from Temple  Micah.

Temple participants in this dinner program include couples, singles, families with bar or bat mitzvah students who participate as part of their mitzvah project, and families with older or younger children who wish to incorporate community and social action into the rhythm of their lives.  Typically, the person or family delivering the meal remains and eats dinner with the men.  According to shelter members, the men enjoy socializing with the volunteers and it gives them a chance for social contact as they try to reintegrate with the community. Each family does the whole meal alone, providing main course, sides, drinks and dessert for seven plus the number of volunteers remaining to eat with the men.

  • FAQ about providing a meal.
  • Other types of services also are appreciated by the shelter, such as computer training sessions, resume writing, etc.

For a full description of volunteer opportunities at the shelter, go to the "Metropolitan Memorial Cooperative Parish - Serve Now!" service project website sign in page.  Enter your email address in the area under “Interested in becoming a member of this community?” and click on “Continue”.  You will be taken to a simple online registration form.  Fill in the brief registration form, indicating in the “notes” section your interest in the St. Luke’s Shelter and click on "send email".  That will result in the website coordinator getting an email about a pending member (you). Once approved by the coordinator,  you will be sent an email message to finalize your registration with the website. You will be then able to access the full website and view volunteer opportunities available.

If you are interested in joining the Temple Micah volunteers at St. Luke's, email us for information.
