Sukkot in Spring

Annual housing rehabilitation program for needy elderly or disabled DC residents

For Jews throughout the world, the arrival of spring signals Passover preparations.  For many Jews in the Washington, DC area, spring also signals preparation for Yachad’s Sukkot in Spring-a spring day when hundreds of Washington-area Jews repair the homes of area residents who, through poverty, age or disability, are unable to make the repairs necessary to keep their homes clean, dry and safe.  This year, Temple Micah, together with Tifereth Israel, will be sponsoring and doing minor-to-moderate repairs on a family’s home, and we invite you to join us in this wonderful mitzvah.

On May 2 and May 9, 2010, we repaired a home in SE Washington, DC, of a woman who lives with her 77-yar old mother, who suffered from dementia, and her three children,  aged 19, 13 and 7.  Volunteer who would like to help us paint, scrape, build and repair the house, were requested to contact Bill Page or 703-532-3225.  Children 14 and older are welcome as well.

Sukkot is the Jewish fall harvest frestival coming five days after Yom Kippur.  A Sukkah is a symbol of the temporary booths that our ancestors lived in during their wanderings in the wilderness.

Email us for more information or to volunteer.  Just a few hours of your time are greatly appreciated.

Contributions Needed: You can also make a contribution, in multiples of $18 or otherwise, to the Social Action Fund of the Temple to cover our congregation's cost of sponsoring the house. The Temple's cost to participate is $1,500, and covers only ½ of the projected expenses of renovation; the rest is covered by the other congregation we team with--in recent years it has been Tifereth Israel--and Yachad.  Mail a check earmarked for "Sukkot in Spring project" to the Temple office.

In addition, the DC-JCC Behrend Builders Program does year round work at various sites and volunteers are welcome. Contact Behrend Builders to volunteer or for more information.
