October Underwear Drive
Underwear Month at Temple Micah
History of the drive.
Our annual collection of new underwear for the homeless, in connection with the Community Council for the Homeless/Friendship Place (CCH), begins each year on Rosh Hashanah and continues through Yom Kippur and the remainder of October. Why October? Because in our tradition at Sukkot, following the High Holy Days, the priests traditionally changed their undergarments for the year. Our drive is the chief supplier of new underwear to homeless people in Northwest Washington through Friendship Place. Our 6th graders are leading this effort. In the 2009 drive, we donated a record-breaking 5,728 pieces of new underwear (by comparison, the previous record, in 2007, was 4,726 pieces of underwear).
We collect new underwear, men's and women's. This year we are collecting:
- Men's underwear, sizes 34 - 36.
- Mens' t-shirts, size XL and XXL only.
- Women's underwear, sizes 7-9.
- Men's white tube socks, sizes 10 - 13.
- Women's white tube socks, sizes 9 - 11.
Keep in mind that most of the homeless shelter's clients are men. Only 10-15% are women
Please bring your donations to Yom Kippur morning services or place them in the collection box in the Temple foyer (after Rosh Hashanah).
