HIAS is seeking experienced federal litigation attorneys to provide pro bono support in mandamus actions. This summer, HIAS began taking a more aggressive approach to helping its clients who are stuck in the asylum backlog by filing mandamus complaints in federal court to compel U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to schedule an interview or issue a decision. HIAS is seeking attorneys with federal court expertise who are admitted to practice in the Eastern District of Virginia, District of Columbia, District of Maryland, Eastern District of New York, Southern District of New York, and District of New Jersey. Pro bono attorneys supporting the mandamus initiative will provide expertise and counsel to HIAS staff attorneys filing actions, serve as co-counsel in mandamus actions with HIAS staff attorneys, and move for pro hac vice admission of HIAS staff attorneys into courts where they are not admitted.
If you are interested in exploring ways to share your expertise to help HIAS file mandamus complaints, please contact Sarah Burrows. If you are part of an organization or a firm that includes attorneys who would likely be willing and able to do this work, please consider communicating with them as well.
