“The music is the mystery, the music is the magic— the music is everything.”
— Rabbi Daniel G. Zemel
Music elevates our experience during worship services and other gatherings and events, bringing a sense of joy, inspiration, reflection, and meditation. Everyone is welcome to sing or play with us throughout the year, whether we are welcoming Shabbat, celebrating b’nai mitzvah, or capturing the joy of song during special services like Shabbat Shirah.
The choir at Temple Micah provides music during B’nai Mitzvah morning services, Shabbat Shirah, High Holy Days, and select community gatherings throughout the year. We rehearse approximately twice a month on Tuesday evenings from 7 – 9 p.m. – view our rehearsal schedule here.
Singers of all ages and experience are welcome! Sign up here to join the choir listserv and receive regular updates and information.
For more information, please contact choir@templemicah.org.
Singers of all ages and experience are invited to join the Pop-Up Choir on select dates throughout the year. Simply arrive at Temple Micah the Saturday morning of the service, rehearse early (9 a.m.) with the choir to learn the music, and sing – no further time commitment required!
Pop-Up Choir rehearsal dates are available here and will be announced in our weekly emails.
Led by Rabbi Slakman, the singing circle is a monthly gathering for members to purely come together and sing. Songs will be simple, repetitive, and often wordless (niggun) with a focus on embracing new melodies and sinking into singing as an energizing, contemplative, spiritual, and community building practice. No experience or ongoing commitment necessary. Come with the desire to explore self, community, and ritual in the context of song. View upcoming dates.
The frame drum is one of the oldest percussion instruments in the world and deeply rooted in the musical cultures of the Middle East and North Africa. In this monthly Middle Eastern Percussion Workshop led by Philip Mayer, participants will learn the fundamental techniques and dive into traditional rhythms that echo through centuries of celebration, ritual, and storytelling. All levels of drumming experience are welcome. View upcoming dates.
Please register in advance to join us. There is no cost to participate; however, participants are highly encouraged to purchase a frame drum for use in this class. We recommend these options, 14-20″ diameter (16″ is a great starting point):
1. Lower-end frame drum (most affordable option)
3. High-end/professional frame drum
If cost is an issue, please reach out to us.
If you play an instrument and want to join us for fun, fellowship, and possible future opportunities to share music with the community, we’d love to have you. Come join music director Philip Mayer and fellow musicians as we continue to make joyful music together!
