Talmud 101: A Lay-Led Community Discussion Group

Join a small, lay-led community group facilitated by Temple member Rachael Fleurence, to explore one of Judaism’s essential texts—the Talmud—together. This group is designed for adults with little or no prior experience and focuses on curiosity, conversation, and shared learning rather than expertise.

Through selected at-home readings, guided discussion and short text study (in Hebrew and English translation), we’ll explore how the Talmud was written, what it covers, how Jews have studied it for centuries, and what it might offer us today. Traditionally, Jews have studied in partnership (havruta), learning through dialogue and debate. We’ll draw on that spirit as we build community through thoughtful discussion and shared reflection on this ancient text.

Meeting Schedule

The group will meet 8 times in person between February and December, with 8–10 participants, at a congregant’s home on Thursday or Sunday evenings (TBD). Each session will include 30 minutes of schmoozing followed by 1 hour of discussion. Participants will be provided with two of the key textbooks we will use. Knowledge of Hebrew is welcome but not required.

This group is part of the Hadar Community Groups program. To participate, you’ll need to commit to attending at least 6 of the 8 sessions. For those who are curious, a brief outline of the sessions is available upon request. If this feels like something you’d like to be part of, please email the Temple office at info@templemicah.org to express interest.
