Blasting shofars, blowing whistles, and chanting “Abolish ICE,” 600 Jews protested at the headquarters of ICE (Immigration & Customs Enforcement) on February 11, demanding an immediate end to ICE’s lawless behavior.
Protesters carried placards emblazoned, “Resisting Tyrants since Pharaoh,” “Rejecting Kings since 1776,” “ICE is a Shonda,” and “We’ve seen this before. It doesn’t end well. Jews against Fascism.”
One hundred rabbis and cantors joined this protest organized by T’ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights and Bend the Arc: Jewish Action, and co-sponsored by Temple Micah and over 60 other Jewish organizations. This unified Jewish response to ICE’s atrocities underscored our community’s solidarity with migrants and refugees.
Behind our “Love Your Neighbor; Stand Against Hate” banner, Temple Micah’s rabbis and more than thirty congregants stood in solidarity, hearing the powerful message of the rally speakers.
Rabbi Jill Jacobs, CEO of T’ruah, reminded the protesters: “God takes the side of the gerim—the immigrants and sojourners. And God demands that we do the same. Let us be clear: ICE is an affront to the Torah. ICE is an affront to God.”
