Elul Project 5786: A Prophetic Call to Return

A vision for hope and change in a fractured world

The prophets wrote from a world falling apart. They lived through political upheaval, economic injustice, corruption, violence, and communities that had grown accustomed to both suffering and complacency. They spoke uncomfortable truths, exposing the gap between the society their communities had become and the one they were called to build.

The prophets remind us that change begins with honest reflection. We must try to understand the world as it is while also holding on to the belief that our human experience is capable of moving toward a more just world.

In the month of Elul, we take stock of our relationships, our behaviors, and the choices that shaped us in the past year. In the spirit of the prophets, we ask ourselves hard questions:

  • How did we live out our responsibilities to one another?
  • How did we show up for our neighbors, literal and metaphorical?
  • How can we confront a fractured world without becoming numb to it?
  • Where did we live according to our values, and where did we fall short?

Over the coming weeks, we’ll explore readings for Elul from our Haftarah Project—the words of prophets Micah, Jeremiah, and Amos—alongside contemporary voices and questions for reflection. We invite you to listen deeply to these ancient texts and consider what they ask of us today as we begin the work of return.
