In August 2024, Lou and Harriet Weiner traveled to Belgium to visit the place where Lou’s mother hid as a child during the Holocaust. This presentation will describe the events of a single day, interwoven with key moments from his mother’s years of hiding, along with personal poems and illustrative paintings.
Harriet and Lou have been members of Temple Micah since 2009, and are residents of Washington, DC. They have three children and nine grandchildren. Lou hails from Philadelphia; his father, also a Philadelphia native, was a WWII veteran and his mother was a hidden child in Belgium during the Holocaust. He is Director of Georgetown University’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, overseeing the cancer center’s basic and clinical trial research, clinical care through the MedStar Georgetown Cancer Institute, community outreach & engagement and cancer research training and education. He maintains a medical oncology practice focused on gastrointestinal cancers, and runs a research laboratory that is developing novel immunotherapy approaches to treat pancreatic cancer.
